One of my favorite things in the world is to see a piece of art and have absolutely no idea how the artist created it. Whenever it seems as if an image was formed in the artist's head and then appeared out of thin air onto paper, that is when I REALLY admire an artist! They are like sorcerers sometimes! This is exactly how I feel about this series titled Reflections by Austrian artist Verena Michelitsch.
From first glance these crystal-like, pastel shards look like they are watercolor paintings. Well, that is at least what I thought they were, but I could not have been more far off. This series, created by artist Verena Michelitsch in collaboration with artist Tobian van Schneider, was actually created through photography! I know what you're thinking...HOW?! When I first read this I was skeptical, since nothing in real life looks like this. According to her website, to create these images Michelitsch and Schneider stacked paper, plastic, and plexiglass and then photographed them from angles. Even after seeing pictures documenting their process, which you can find on Micheltisch's website, it is still difficult to comprehend how these wonderfully piercing, geometric shapes were made. Even after knowing the secret of how these pieces were made, they are still just as mystifying!
