I know what you're thinking....what are these images? Photographs? Sculptures? The answer is none of the above! These incredible pieces are from the mind of Leslie Shows, who has work currently on display at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art here in Arizona. I was fortunate enough to attend her artist lecture recently, and I'd have to say her words were just as alluring and mysterious as her works of art. Even in person, I could not figure out what these pieces were made out of.
Leslie Shows, originally from Alaska, is heavily interested in minerals. As we all know, a very precious mineral was found in Alaska; gold. However, pyrite, or "fool's gold" is even more common in her native state. Shows explained that the origin of these pieces came from when she scanned a piece of pyrite on a scanner, which created similarly bizarre and crystal-like forms. Then, through layers and layers of collaging different materials including glass, sand, paint, and countless other materials, she created these images on a beautiful, aluminum surface. Talk about a multifaceted process! If you are in the Phoenix metro area, you definitely don't want to miss seeing these stunning, reflective pieces.
